Paradoxes

This might totally be confirmation bias but I've started to notice that many of life's greatest mysteries/lessons are paradoxes. And, further, that we are all hypocrites.

  • "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself β€” and you are the easiest person to fool." β€” Richard Feynman
  • Humans. Can't live with them. Can't live without them.
  • β€œThe more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.” ― Albert Einstein
  • The only certainty is uncertainty.
  • No pain, no gain.
  • When Ralph Waldo Emerson said that Harvard taught all the branches of knowledge, Thoreau replied: β€œYes, all the branches and none of the roots.”
  • The more choices we have, the harder it is to make a choice. (paradox of choice)
  • "Social" media makes us less social.
  • Moral Relativism
  • β€œNo tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.” ― Carl Jung
  • I can accept where I'm at in life and still want to change and improve myself.
  • β€œI have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” β€” Mark Twain
  • Murphy's Law

  • For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
  • You must slow down to speed up.
  • Pareto distribution.
  • Work to live OR live to work.
  • If you want to save others, you must save yourself first.
  • Peter Thiel on working at a prestigious Manhattan law firm: "From the outside everyone wanted to get in" but "on the inside ... everybody wanted out."

  • Order is but an illusion. Choas is all that is there.

  • Do not give advice. Live it. (modification of quote by Epictetus)

  • The world doesn't revolve around you but everything in your immediate experience supports the deep belief that you are the center of the universe. Paraphrased from DFW's speech "This is Water"
  • Socratic paradox: "All I know is that I know nothing."

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs are the best hockey franchise of all-time but they have fewer Stanley Cup Wins than the Montreal Canadiens 😳😒(and doesn't look like they will have more coming in the foreseeable future TBH)

Note: some of these are probably not 100% true. For example, β€˜to speed up, you must slow down’. I have no idea if that’s true based on stats (doubt it) so it’s probably a cognitive bias rather than grounded in reality.
